Poly Chief Palace: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Reviving Industrial Heritage with a Chinese Twist by Hyp-Arch Design

Set amidst the industrial backdrop of Shenyang's Tiexi District, the Poly Chief Palace by Hyp-Arch Design stands as a testament to the seamless integration of traditional Chinese elements with modern industrial aesthetics. This unique architectural marvel, which serves as a sales center, is a tribute to the district's rich industrial heritage, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.

The Poly Chief Palace is not just another building; it's a story of the past meeting the future. The designers drew inspiration from the district's old industrial base, a group of buildings that carry the memory of a generation and express the cultural context of Tiexi. The aim was to continue the historical accumulation of Tiexi's industrial culture while ensuring the unique architectural style and quality of the project.

What sets the Poly Chief Palace apart is the incorporation of traditional Chinese elements into the industrial design. The façade of the sales center is a three-part pattern that combines Chinese and industrial details, reflecting the solemnity, luxury, and grandness of traditional culture. This pattern is a stark departure from ordinary buildings, making the Palace a unique architectural spectacle.

The space structure of the Palace further emphasizes this fusion. The traditional elements, known as the Four Treasures of the Study, are represented with architectural language: the wall symbolizes Paper, a moon-like sculpture represents Inkstone, an infinity pool signifies Ink, and trees stand for the Brush. This creative representation of traditional elements in a modern setting is a testament to the designers' innovative approach.

The realization of the Poly Chief Palace involved transforming industrial elements like continuous pipelines, grid frame enclosed pipes, metal frames, and detailed valve assembly into material components of the building. This process not only enhanced the volume and shape of traditional buildings but also highlighted the overall grandeur of the Palace.

Despite the challenges involved in integrating modern materials with Chinese expression methods, the design team managed to create a façade that is far from monotonous. The detailed structural design, from the molding of walls to the choice of column constructions, reflects the meticulousness of the project.

The Poly Chief Palace is a celebration of the industrial culture of Shenyang's Tiexi District. It is a regionalized embodiment of the integration of tradition and modernity, representing an industrial-style modern urban space with Chinese elements. The project, which started in March 2017 and finished in December 2019, is a proud recipient of the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020.
